Description
A close up of the amazing textures formed by wind erosion on one of the Moais de Tara, a series of spectacular ignimbrite rock outcrops in the high plains of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. They are also known as Los Monjes de la Pacana ("Pacana Monks") as they look like monks and are located near the Pacana Hills that cross the desert nearby. The rocks are of volcanic origin and have been sculpted over time by the strong winds that blow across the region. The rocks are at an altitude of over 4000m /13,00ft, the alternating extremes of the sun's heat and strong UV rays and bitter sub-zero night temperatures at high altitude have also weathered the rock's surface.

A very interesting piece of rockface - voted for in the contest PATTERNS WITHIN ROCKS in the group Go Take A Hike

Thank you Lesley, appreciated! Some of the weathering patterns on these volcanic rocks are fascinating, worth looking at in detail
