Description
The Milky Way rises next to one of the Moais de Tara, a series of spectacular rock formations at an altitude of around 4300m / 14,100ft in the high plains of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. They are also known as Los Monjes de la Pacana ("Pacana Monks") as some of them look like monks and are located near the Pacana Hills that cross the desert nearby. The rocks are of volcanic origin and have been sculpted over time by the strong winds that blow across this harsh yet beautiful landscape.
The clouds of stars to the right of the rock are the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC, above) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC, below). They are irregular dwarf galaxies that orbit the Milky Way. The lighting is from the last quarter moon which has recently risen.
