Description
Mt Illampu (6368m / 20,890ft) is the 4th highest in Bolivia and the northernmost major peak the Cordillera Real range. There are several myths and legends about the peak, the dwelling place of many Andean gods and one of the hardest climbs in Bolivia; even its normal route is a tough and serious challenge. It was first climbed in June 1928 by a German / Austrian team. The smaller peak to the left of Illampu is Pico Schulze (5943m / 19,495ft). The grass is Purple or Andean pampas grass (Cortaderia jubata) which is native to the central northern Andes but often considered a pest in other places where it has been introduced (it is an invasive species if conditions allow).
