Description
The magnificent Mt Illampu (6368m / 20,890ft) is the 4th highest in Bolivia and the northernmost major peak the Cordillera Real range. There are several myths and legends about the peak, the dwelling place of many Andean gods and one of the hardest climbs in Bolivia; even its normal route is a tough and serious challenge. It was first climbed in June 1928 via the SW ridge by a German / Austrian team. The smaller peak in front and to the right of is Pico Schulze (5943m / 19,495ft); the large terminal moraine below it gives an idea of how much glaciers in the Andes have receded in recent decades.
