Description
The Neptune Fountain in the Plaza de Canovas del Castillo in the Paseo del Prado was built from 1872-86 as part of the renovations made to central Madrid by King Carlos III. The fountain was designed by Ventura Rodriguez, (who also designed the nearby Cibeles fountain) and depicts Neptune riding a shell chariot being pulled by 2 hippocamps or sea horses, mythological creatues which have the body of a horse and tail of a fish. The Paseo del Prado and its monuments and fountains were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2021.
