Description
A panoramic image in 3:1 format (made of 7 vertical shots stiched together) of rock formations in the Cordillera de Sal near San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile. This particular area is known as Valle de la Muerte / Valley of Death; the peaks in the centre distance are the conical Licancabur (5915m / 19,410ft) and Juriques (5705m / 18,715ft) volcanos. These and the range of volcanos to the left (north) all lie on or close to the border with Bolivia. The Atacama Desert stretches for over 1000km between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes and is the world's driest and probably oldest desert. In some areas rain has never been recorded, geological research suggests the region has been continuously arid for many millions of years.
