Description
The Milky Way rises over the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat covering 10,582 square km / 4,086 square miles in south west Bolivia. The glowing patch of stars on the right of the image is the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), an irregular dwarf galaxy visible in the southern hemisphere that orbits the Milky Way. The clear skies and high altitudes (the Salar is at 3656m / 12,000ft above sea level) in the southern hemisphere can make for stunning views of the stars and the Milky Way, especially as the region is generally very dry.
The yellowish glow on the horizon left of centre are the lights of Uyuni village maybe 20km /15 miles away. The glow on the water covered salt in the foreground (the Salar can flood to a depth of only a few cm during the rainy season depending on conditions, note the reflected stars) is the result of some light painting.
