Description
The morenada is one of the most popular and best known dances in Bolivia, and is especially associated with the Gran Poder festival in La Paz which was added to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. The dance is thought to have started among African slaves brought to the country during the colonial period, though there are several other theories. The characters and masks are parodies of the Spanish colonial rulers and the suffering of the slaves. As always the dance and costumes have evolved and become more elaborate and spectacular over time.
