Description
Gauchito (literally "little gaucho / cowboy") Antonio Gil is Argentina's most popular folk hero. There are various versions of his legend but most say he was born in the 1840s near the city of Mercedes, Corrientes, was enlisted / conscripted into the army during the Triple Alliance War and also the Argentine Civil War but deserted and became an outlaw. As an outlaw he became something of Robin Hood style hero helping the poor before he died in 1878. His tomb is in the Sanctuary of Gauchito Gil near Mercedes, which is a popular pilgrimage destination (especially on the date of his death) even though he is not officially recognised as a saint by the Catholic Church. Red shrines in his honour are common by roadsides across Argentina and can also be seen in neighbouring countries, especially in border areas (this image was taken at a shrine in the far south of Bolivia near Tarija).
