Description
A group of rustic adobe (mud brick) houses in Sajama National Park in the Bolivian altiplano after a winter snowfall. In the past the native Aymara and Quechua peoples of the Andes lived in small family groups or clans called ayllus, a system that still continues in many places today. With improved infrastructure and ever increasing migration to the cities a lot of these small, remote communities have been abandoned, become occupied on a temporary basis or only by elderly family members who look after the livestock (very important in the Sajama region as agriculture is very difficult).
These snowfalls are caused by cold fronts coming up from the south and transform the altiplano steppes into harsh yet strangely beautiful landscapes. Heavy falls can cut remote areas off for days or more and be a real hardship for the local people and their livestock, which struggle to find grazing under the snow. The mountains emerging from the clouds in the distance are on the border with Chile.
