Description
These monolithic stones are part of the Late Formative period (500BC-100AD) ceremonial site of Konko Wankani / Konko Wakane in the altiplano of the southern Lake Titicaca basin region of Bolivia. Recent investigations at another part of the site have led archaeologists to believe the inhabitants used quicklime to strip flesh from bodies for funeral rituals and to make the bones more portable (remains of ancestors were often removed from tombs for ceremonies and carried on journeys by llama traders and others).
