Description
The Andean goose (Chloephaga melanoptera) can be found on lakes, marshes, bogs and wetlands in the Andes in Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and the northwest of Argentina (often at very high altitudes). Considered a species of sheldgoose rather than a true goose, it is the only one found at high altitudes. Bofedales, a special type of wetland only found in the high altiplano regions of the Andes, are a popular habitat. They consist of large hard cushions of Oxychloe andina plants (often known as the Andean rush) and other species of grasses and mosses interspersed with shallow pools and rivulets.
