Description
José Antonio de la Caridad Maceo y Grajales was born in Santiago de Cuba in June 1845. He was second-in-command of the Cuban Army in the War of Independence against the Spanish, during which he was killed (at Punta Brava near Havana on 7th December 1896). He was given the nickname “The Bronze Titan" (El Titán de Bronce in Spanish) after being wounded on various occasions in battles. There are several monuments to him in Cuba, this impressive one is on the Malecon in Havana.
