Description
These Arma Christi / Arms of Christ crosses are common in Peru and include various instruments of the passion, such as the ladder, spear, rod and sponge. This one, which is next to the cathedral in Puno, also includes the sacred heart (at the bottom of the image) and the sun and moon, which were important deities to the Incas and indigenous people of the Andes. Hanging from the right of the cross is a sword with an ear, referring to the moment when Peter cut off a Roman solider's ear when Jesus was arrested. On the left hand side are a hammer and pincers (for nailing Jesus to the cross) and a trumpet.
