Description
The famous Black Christ / Cristo Negro statue in Portobelo on the Caribbean coast of Panama. Housed inside San Felipe church, it is one of Panama's most important saints, venerated throughout the year and especially on October 21st. Exactly how the life sized statue arrived in Portabelo is unknown, one legend says that the statue was supposed to be sent to Spain during the 17th century but the ship carrying it was forced to dock at Portobelo during a storm. Every time the ship was scheduled to leave storms set in, preventing the ship from sailing; this happened repeatedly until the sailors, thinking the statue was to blame, threw the box containing it into the sea. The storms cleared and the ship was then able to leave; the statue was later found by fisherman and housed in a small church. The church where it resides now was built in 1814.
