Description
If there is sufficient spring rainfall the southern part of Chile's Atacama Desert (the world's driest) and coastal dunes can burst into flower. This phenomenon is known locally as El Desierto Florido (The Flowering Desert) and occurs roughly twice a decade. Many of the species that flower are endemic to the region. This image was taken in the Llanos de Challe National Park in Region III de Atacama which was created to protect the unique flora of the area and is a great place to see the desert in bloom.
