Description
Common or English bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) flowering around the base of a partially fallen birch tree (Betula pendula) in a typical Weald of Kent woodland in southeast England. This beautiful flower is native to north western Europe and the UK, and is the species that produces the famous blue carpets known as "bluebell woods" in spring. It is an indicator species for ancient woodlands and is a protected species in the UK.
