Description
One of a large collection of images I've built up over the years of the Todos Santos / All Saints / Day of the Dead celebrations in Bolivia. These special bread figures called tantawawas (literally "bread babies", the painted plaster facesare called caretas or caretitas) are made for the occasion and are believed to represent the souls of the dead. They are always present on the mesas or altars that are built to receive the souls of loved ones on November 1st, when it is believed return to visit the living for 24 hours.
