Description
Detail of one of the doors of the Puerta del Perdon / Portal of Forgiveness, the main entrance to Toledo's magnificent cathedral. The Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo (Catedral Primada Santa María de Toledo, its full name) is one of the finest gothic style cathedrals in Spain and is modeled after Bourges cathedral. Building began in 1226 under the rule of Ferdinand III and it was completed in 1493.
Construction of the Portal of Forgiveness began under the direction of Alvar Matinez in 1418; the 5m high doors are covered with bronze plates. The lion and castle symbols on the door are also on the city's coat of arms. Toledo is one of Spain's most historic cities and was the capital of Visigoth Spain until the Moors conquered the region in the 8th century.
