Description
Diaethria clymena, better known as "El numero" / "The Number" butterfly is a common species in tropical forest habitats from Nicaragua south to Brazil. There are at least 13 subspecies. Many of the Diaethria species have striking underwing patterns.

Thank you Alinna, they're quite common in tropical South America, others in the family have some unusual underwing patterns too

Love these beautiful butterflies James. You might be able to solve a 40year mystery. When we were camping at the Iguassu Falls, there were dozens of butterflies on the ground seemingly feeding. Do you know what they are after? Our (Aussie) butterflies don't seem to do this. Beautiful captures.f/l

Thank you Denise, glad you enjoyed them! A lot of the time they are after salts and minerals, presumably some soils are much more attractive for this than others, shores of rivers and streams can attract loads of them!
