Description
The first light from the sun just before it rises illuminates some Echinopsis atacamensis cacti on Incahuasi Island in the middle of the Salar de Uyuni in south west Bolivia. These cacti are the pasacana subspecies of Echinopsis atacamensis, they grow in Bolivia and northern Argentina and are common in the region. In the cold dry climate they only grow at approx 1cm a year, the tallest can be well over 10m high.
The Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat, covering 10,582 square km / 4,086 square miles. The peak on the horizon is the Tunupa volcano (5320m / 17,460ft), which dominates views across to the northern shore of the Salar.
