Description
The perfect cone of Parinacota volcano is the highest peak (6330m / 20,765ft) in Lauca National Park in the far north of Chile; it is also said to be the highest symmetrical conical volcano in the world. The lake, Lake Chungara was formed by a lava dam during an eruption. At 4,517m /14,820ft it is one of the highest lakes in South America and covers approx 21.5 square km / 8.3 sq miles. The Park is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981.
