Description
A view over the quaint historic town of Caminha and the River Minho estuary in the far north of Portugal on a stormy afternoon. The river is the border with Spain, the far bank is part of Galicia. Its location means the site has long been of strategic importance; the Romans had a military settlement here and in the 13th century King Afonso III built a new castle and fortifications around what at the time was a fishing village. The old castle keep is now the clock tower in the centre of the image, to its left is the 15th / 16th century parish church or Igreja Matriz. Some of the old city walls can be seen in the foreground of this image.
