Description
A view over the centre of the historic town of Caminha in the far north of Portugal and the River Minho estuary. The river is the border with Spain, the far bank is part of Galicia. Its location means the site has long been of strategic importance; the Romans had a military settlement here and in the 13th century King Afonso III built a new castle and fortifications around what at the time was a fishing village. The old castle keep is now the clock tower in the centre of the image, to its left is the 15th / 16th century parish church or Igreja Matriz.
