Description
This ornate carved stone cross is above the entrance to the cloisters of the San Juan de los Reyes monastery in Toledo, Spain. The monastery was founded by King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile to commemorate both the birth of their son (Prince John), and also their victory over the army of Afonso V of Portugal at the Battle of Toro in 1476. It is in the Isabelline style and was built between 1477 and 1504. Toledo is one of Spain's most historic cities and was the capital of Visigoth Spain until the Moors conquered the region in the 8th century. Toledo Historic City was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986.
