Description
Viana do Castelo in northern Portugal was an important port in mediaeval times, when it was the departure point for many Portuguese explorers. The massive Romanesque Gothic style Cathedral of St. Mary the Great (also called the Igreja Matriz) dates from the 15th century, the stone carvings on the archway of the main entrance feature the apostles.
