A close up of one of the panels of geoglyphs at Cerro Pintados, 94km south of Iquique in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. Cerro Pintados is the largest collection of geoglyphs in South America, with over 450 figures spread along 4km of hillside. It is likely these geoglyphs provided information to travellers on a route taken by llama caravans from the highlands to the coast; many early cultures lived in the river valleys that cross the region and on the coast and there was considerable trade with the civilisations of the Andean highlands. This image shows a camelid, a circle that is probably a corral where they were kept at night, 2 bird figures at the top and an unuusal shape on the right that could be a harpoon or spear.
