Description
If there is sufficient spring rainfall the southern part of Chile's Atacama Desert (the world's driest) and coastal dunes can burst into flower. This phenomenon is known locally as El Desierto Florido (The Flowering Desert) and occurs roughly twice a decade. Many of the species that flower are endemic to the region, this one Chaetanthera limbata is known locally as China and is a member of the Asteraceae family which includes daisies.
