Description
A black and white image of part of the Che Guevara Mausoleum a memorial complex in dedicated to Ernesto "Che" Guevara in Santa Clara, Cuba. Che was an Argentinian medical student who became a left wing revolutionary as the result of the poverty and harsh conditions he saw while traveling through Latin America as a student. He was Fidel Castro's 2nd in command during the Cuban Revolution and held several important posts in the Cuban government. He was executed by the Bolivian military on 9th October 1967 after an unsuccessful capaign to start an uprising there. He has become something of a hero and icon to left wing movements worldwide and face is often seen all over Latin America.
Santa Clara was the site of the final battle (in which Che played a prominent role) of the Cuban Revolution on December 31, 1958, which led to the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista fleeing into exile. The memorial complex was inaugurated in December 1988. Che was buried here with full military honors on 17 October 1997 after his remains were discovered in Bolivia and returned to Cuba. Many of those who were killed with him in his Bolivia campaign are also buried here. The site also contains a museum.
