Description
A hoarding with images of Ernesto "Che" Guevara on the roadside near Vinales, Cuba. The images are based on photos of Che taken of him by Cuban photographers, most notably the famous "El Guerrillero Heroico" / "Heroic Guerrilla Fighter" photograph taken by Alberto Korda in 1960. This photo is the basis for most of the modern images of Che (such as the one top right of this hoarding) and as a result is thought to be possibly the most reproduced photograph of all time.
Che was an Argentinian medical student who became a left wing revolutionary as the result of the poverty and harsh conditions he saw while traveling through Latin America as a student. He was Fidel Castro's 2nd in command during the Cuban Revolution and held several important posts in the Cuban government. He was executed by the Bolivian military on 9th October 1967. He has become something of a hero and icon to left wing movements worldwide and face is often seen all over Latin America. Murals and hoardings such as this with slogans exhorting people to follow his example are a common sight all over Cuba.
