Description
A detail of a stone carving of the letters IHS (a shortened form of the Greek word for Jesus) called a Christogram in the Compania de Jesus Jesuit church cloisters. The cloisters are one of the most notable architectural monuments in the city of Arequipa in southern Peru. It is a superb example of the Andean Baroque style and like many colonial buildings in the city is built using a local white volcanic stone called sillar. Arequipa's historic colonial centre was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 2000.
