Description
A classic 1955 Buick Special with black and yellow two-tone paintwork parked outside typical buildings in the port city of Cienfuegos in southern Cuba. Cuba is famous for the large number of vintage American cars that can be seen there, many of which were left behind by their owners after the Cuban Revolution in 1959. The subsequent US embargo made it harder to import new models, hence the older cars are still widely used.
The modern city of Cienfuegos was founded in 1819 and rapidly became an important port due to its strategic location on Cuba's south coast and proximity to large sugar plantations. Often called "La Perla del Sur" / "Pearl of the South", its Urban Historic Centre was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2005.
