Description
Classic American cars parked in front of El Capitolio / the National Capitol Building, one of the most famous buildings and popular tourist attractions in Havana, Cuba. It was built between 1926 - 1929 during the Gerardo Machado administration. The US firm Purdy and Henderson oversaw the construction, the design is similar to the United States Capitol building but not a replica of it. Before the 1959 Cuban Revolution the Congress was housed here, after 1959 the Congress was abolished and disbanded and the building fell into disrepair. Since 2013 the government has been slowly restoring the building for use again as the home of Cuba's National Assembly.
Cuba is famous for the large number of vintage American cars that can be seen there, many of which were left behind by their owners after the Cuban Revolution in 1959. The subsequent US embargo made it harder to import new models, hence the older cars are still widely used. The Capitol building is right in the centre of the historic city and a popular start and end point for shared taxi public transport routes across the city
