Description
Taquile Island is found in the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca, its inhabitants speak Quechua, still use traditional dress and strongly preserve their traditional way of life. The Taquilenos (as the islanders are called) are also famous for their weaving skills; Taquile and its textile art traditions were originally declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005 and added to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. The hand woven textile bags are called chuspas, men use them to carry coca leaves which they chew throughout the day when working in the fields. The leaves are also commonly exchanged as a form of greeting.
