Description
A man in a sailing boat with a green sail collects totora reeds (Schoenoplectus californicus subsp. tatora) in the Inner Lake (called Winaymarka, Huinaymarca or Lago Menor locally) in Bolivia, part of Lake Titicaca. The mountain in the image is Mt Huayna Potosi (6088m / 19,975ft) in the Cordillera Real or "Royal Range" of the Andes Mountains. Totora reeds grow in huge numbers in the shallower parts of the lake and are an important refuge for wildlife. They have also been used for millennia by people who lived near the shore of the lake for building houses, boats and food. Nowadays they are mainly collected for fodder for livestock and making souvenirs for tourists and other domestic items.
