Description
These beautiful cloisters belong to the Compania de Jesus Jesuit church and are one of the most notable architectural monuments in the city of Arequipa in southern Peru. It is a superb example of the Andean Baroque style and like many colonial buildings in the city is built using a local white volcanic stone called sillar. The indigenous people often used pre-Columbian symbolism in carvings when building the churches, such as the angels with sun-like faces and wings similar to the sun's rays (representing Inti, the Inca sun god) at the top of these pillars. Arequipa's historic colonial centre was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 2000.
