Description
Corpus Christi (The Body of Christ) is one of the most important dates in the Catholic calendar. The celebrations in Cusco are some of the largest in Latin America, 15 saints are carried from their churches throughout the city to the cathedral on the central Plaza de Armas for further parades and masses. This image shows the Virgen de Natividad de la Almudena being carried past the cathedral by indigenous bearers wearing traditional dress. The man is carrying one of the wooden legs used to support the heavy wooden statue when the bearers are resting at stops during the parades.
