Description
A view of Guallatiri volcano (6071m /19,918ft), one of the most active volcanos in northern Chile. It's last confirmed eruption was in 1960, it seems likely it also erupted in 1985 and there was a notable increase in fumarole activity in 2015 which coincided with a magnitude 6.4 earthquake nearby (the epicentre was approx 7km from the summit). This area is part of the Las Vicunas National Reserve and also the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981.
Many peaks in the Andes were and are considered sacred and dwelling places of the apus or mountain deities; hilltop sites such as this with views of major mountains are commonly used for rituals and offerings. Cairns, either a simple pile of stones or more elaborate stepped ones like these in the form of the Andean Cross or Chakana are common on mountain passes and hilltops. The Chakana is an ancient symbol in the Andes; this image clearly shows the fusion of ancient beliefs and Catholic traditions and symbols that is common in the region.
