Description
Detail of the Crucifixion of Jesus made from Portugal's famous blue and white azulejo ceramic tiles on the facade of the Capela das Almas / Chapel of Souls church in Viana do Castelo. Viana do Castelo was an important port in mediaeval times, when it was the departure point for many Portuguese explorers. The Capela das Almas is the city's oldest church and dates from the 13th century though most of the current building was built in the early 18th century. It was once the chapel of the former cemetery, hence the name.
