Description
A tourist cruise boat visits the world's most southerly lighthouse, which is in the Beagle Channel in the far south of Argentina. Its official name is Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse (in French "Les Éclaireurs" means "the Scouts") as it is located on one of the small group of Les Eclaireurs islands. It entered service on December 23, 1920; the tower is 11m / 36 ft high and the light 22.5m / 74 ft above sea level.
The Beagle Channel lies to the south of Big Island / Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego and separates it from several smaller islands to the south (which are in Chile). It is named after the ship HMS Beagle, whose first voyage surveying the coasts of the southern part of South America lasted from 1826 to 1830. A young naturalist called Charles Darwin later joined the ship for its second voyage (from December 1831 to October 1836). This voyage visited southern South America and then the Galapagos Islands.
