Description
A view of Cusco cathedral and the Plaza de Armas square at dusk. The cathedral was built between 1560 and 1664 on the site of the palace of Viracocha Inca and many of the stones were taken from the nearby Inca fortess of Sacsayhuaman to emphasise the Spanish dominance over the recently conquered Inca empire. Most of the building is in the Gothic Renaissance style; inside is an impressive collection of Catholic art and large silver covered altars. In the background on the hillside is San Cristobal church.
