Description
The Cusco city flag flying over the Compania de Jesus / Society of Jesus church in the city's main Plaza de Armas square. The church was built by the Jesuits between 1576 and 1668 on the site of the palace of the Inca Huayna Capac; much of it had to be rebuilt after an earthquake in 1650. It is considered to be one of the finest examples of the Spanish colonial baroque architecture in the Americas.
This variation of the rainbow flag appeared in Peru in the early 1970s and was declared an official emblem of the city of Cusco by the mayor in 1978. It has also become an unofficial symbol representing the Quechua people and language and the Inca Empire and its legacy and heritage, though there is disagreement among historians as to the actual historical use of flags by the Incas and other pre-Columbian cultures. As of 2021 (and after this photo was taken) a golden sun symbol has been added to the flag to distinguish it more clearly from the LGBT flag. The flag is flown throughout the month of June, which is the official Month of Festivals in Cusco.
