Description
The Cybele Fountain in the Plaza de Cibeles is one of Madrid's most famous landmarks. The fountain was designed by Ventura Rodriguez and shows the goddess Cybele sitting on a chariot pulled by two lions. Cybele was an originally Anatolian mother goddess who was particularly worshipped by the Phrygians. Her cult was later adopted and adapted by both the ancient Greeks and Romans. The building is the Cybele Palace, better known as the Palace of Communication (its name until 2011). It has been the Madrid City Hall since 2007; before that it was home to the Postal and Telegraphic Museum. The Plaza de Cibeles and this fountain were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2021 along with the famous Paseo del Prado boulevard, of which the Plaza marks the northern end.
