Description
The Cybele Fountain in the Plaza de Cibeles is one of Madrid's most famous and important landmarks. The fountain was designed by Ventura Rodriguez and shows the goddess Cybele (Cibeles in Spanish) sitting on a chariot pulled by two lions. Cybele was an originally Anatolian mother goddess who was particularly worshipped by the Phrygians. Her cult was later adopted and adapted by both the ancient Greeks and Romans. The building in the background is the Palacio de Ramon Pla Monje (also known as Edificio Aurora Polar), built in 1880. The Plaza de Cibeles and this fountain were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2021 along with the famous Paseo del Prado boulevard, of which the Plaza marks the northern end.
