Description
Old wooden crosses in the historic cemetery near the small fishing port of Pisagua on Chile's Atacama Desert coast. Pisagua was an important nitrate exporting port in the 19th and first part of the 20th century, it is now mostly abandoned though it still supports a small fishing community. It also has a darker history - its isolated location means it has been used several times as a concentration camp, most notoriously by the military dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet. A mass grave of political prisoners executed soon after the military coup of September 1973 was found at the far end of this cemetery in 1990. The harsh midday light helped bring out the textures in the hillside and with the crosses gave a sinister feel to the images that seemed fitting given the events that occurred here.....
