Description
Diablada devil dancers performing at Bolivia's Oruro Carnival, one of the most famous festivals in South America. It was originally declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2001 and added to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. The Diablada is probably Bolivia's most famous dance and is particularly associated with Oruro Carnival. It symbolises the battle between good and evil; dance groups feature hundreds of devils in spectacular masks and costumes.
The event is well worth a visit if you get the opportunity. The main parades feature thousands of dancers in varying and colourful costumes and plenty of noise from the accompanying bands; sights and sounds you are unlikely to forget in a hurry!
