Description
A shot of the approx 36 hour old waxing crescent / new moon and obliging wisps of light cloud at sunset. The glow lighting up most of the moon's surface is earthshine, reflected earthlight (sunlight reflected by the Earth) lighting up the Moon's night side. It is also known as the Moon's ashen glow or "the new Moon with the old Moon in her arm". The latter phrase is probably best known from the verse in The Ballad of Sir Patrick Spens:
"I saw the new moon late yestreen
With the old moon in her arm;
And if we go to sea, master,
I fear we'll come to harm."
