Description
This ecological Christmas tree in La Paz, Bolivia was part of a project by the City Hall to encourage recycling. It was made of approx 50,000 plastic drinks bottles, stands over 15m high and was built by 150 volunteers. At night the lights were lit by people riding bicycles, which were set on mounts and connected to rechargable batteries to provide the power. The city is located at around 3600m / 12,600ft above sea level and traditional Christmas trees are hard to come by. The City Hall compensates by coming up with original and artistic ideas for modern Christmas trees to decorate the city's parks and squares, often working with local artists, school and civic groups. Also in the image is Iglesia San Francisco, the city's most notable colonial church.
