Description
This fantastic and bizarre eroded volcanic rock formation is called "El Arbol de Piedra" ("The Rock / Stone Tree"). It is found in the Siloli Desert in southwest Bolivia and is one of the best known landmarks of the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve (Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Abaroa in Spanish, often referred to locally by its Spanish acronym REA). It has been formed by wind erosion (aeolian or eolian processes) - the fierce high altitude winds (the Siloli Desert is at a height of approx. 4500m / 14,800ft) blowing sand and gravel across this barren region have sculpted it over time. It is a superb example of what geologists call a ventifact.
