Description
El Capitolio / the National Capitol Building is one of the most famous buildings and popular tourist attractions in Havana, Cuba. It was built between 1926 - 1929 during the Gerardo Machado administration. The US firm Purdy and Henderson oversaw the construction, the design is similar to the United States Capitol building but not a replica of it. Before the 1959 Cuban Revolution the Congress was housed here, after 1959 the Congress was abolished and disbanded and the building fell into disrepair. Since 2013 the government has been slowly restoring the building for use again as the home of Cuba's National Assembly.
